Ala Derkowska elected to WMD Steering Committee

The Steering Committee elected Ala at a meeting in Kiev last spring.

The Steering Committee of the World Movement for Democracy brings together leading democracy activists, scholars, and practitioners from every region of the world.

The Committee provides overall guidance to the secretariat of the World Movement, which is currently located at the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington, D.C.

For more information on the World Movement for Democracy, visit Information offered there includes membership of the Steering Committee and the Movement's founding statement adopted at its initial gathering in New Delhi, India in February 1999.

Since its inception, the World Movement has become a key support network for democracy on a global scale.

Members of the Steering Committee provide counsel and help incorporate into the Movement the various networks with which they have become involved in their own democracy-related work.

The Committee meets every 6-9 months or so to discuss the key issues and to help develop ideas to chart the Movement's future course. (The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Prague this fall.) Beyond that, the secretariat consults with Committee members on topics ranging from the World Assemblies (i.e., agenda, theme, workshops, speakers, participation, and tributes) to activities of the networks and other matters such as the action alerts the Movement issues from time to time on behalf of persecuted democrats.
